Bringing biotech into schools

Hello, my name is Andreas,

I am a researcher in biotechnology from Austria (Europe) and I am visiting Gabriel and Sci-House for a few weeks. I love how easy modern biotechnology has become and think it should be accessible to everyone, so that power is not concentrated to big companies only. We should all benefit from the newest technologies that make our lives better. When Gabriel asked me to join him visiting a school and giving a workshop, my answer was immediately yes.

The classroom was filled with lots of kids age 14-17, who come from a difficult background. We brought Foldscopes, paper microscopes that have up to 400-fold magnification and can be assembled very fast, and they are very cheap as well. The kids were very receptive and successfully built the microscopes. Afterwards, we went outside to collect samples such as lichens, grass, mushrooms, etc. The microscopes worked great, and the kids loved it.

Afterwards, we had an AMA session. We talked about biology, 3D printing, organ printing, mesh nets to provide internet to the poor and much more.  One child even told us that this was the best science experiment he had done in his life so far. Knowing that there is much room above, we plan to come back, maybe with a 3D printer. Showing this kids technology seems very crucial, as it may enable them to create a better world in their surroundings.

It’s only a drop of water on a hot rock, but it sure feels great to show people a world in which everything is possible and the sky (may) be the limit.

SciHouse Has An Intern!

Hello,

My name is Alex Bartkowiak.

I am an 11th-grade student that has chosen an alternative method of education

I have a passion for science and have been starting my journey into making the world a better place through the application of science and technology.

I contacted the lab about 3 months ago in hope of getting lab space to work on a continuation for the Florida State science fair. My relationship with the lab soon became more complex as I chose to leave high-school in search of a more beneficial education.

I was offered a position at the lab by Gabriel Licina later that summer. Currently, I am SciHouse’s best (and only) intern. My job is to help out around the lab with just about everything. In exchange, I gain a greater understanding of the field of biology and the politics of modern science. By simply having the ability to listen and participate in discussions happening daily around the lab, I have already gained knowledge that would have required thousands of dollars at a university.

SciHouse’s ideals coincide very well with my own, and I can see myself potentially pursuing a nontraditional career path, one day, in the sciences. I hope to provide a new perspective and fresh ideas to the lab as they have already provided me with so many opportunities.

Sincerely,

-That High School Kid

Amazon Smile comes to Scihouse

Hey everyone,

We’ve been doing a lot lately to rebuild the lab. We have some classes coming up and of course, the monthly meetup group.

One thing that is new that we’re very excited is that Scihouse is now a member of the Amazon Smile program.

By using this link or the banner below when you want to go shopping at Amazon, with every purchase that you make, Amazon will donate a percentage of that to Scihouse. You can get your shopping done and also support a small science focused nonprofit like us without it costing you anything extra.

Please save the link, and think about us next time you’re going to shop at Amazon.

Thanks!

Scibus Arrives!

This past monday we welcomed the newest members of the Scihouse ecosystem, Scibus! Scibus’s 2 members, Jesse Hughes and Angel Celeste, drove across the country to come and do cool stuff with us. They brought with them their adorable bus-turned-house and a trailer full of tools, supplies and samples that they collected during their journey.

They were here barely a few hours before we were already hard at work in our continued efforts to bioremediate our yard and built an adorable bug hotel out of salvaged materials.

We look forward to many more days building together and doing cool projects so be sure to keep an eye out for more updates!

The State of Scihouse and New Exciting Things

It has been an eventful few months and we just wanted to let you know the state of things. We had put together a fantastic bio lab and were gearing up to start monthly classes and were doing some cool research. Due to a series of circumstances that created a strong conflict of interest, we had to cut ties with the sponsor that was helping to pay for some of the lab costs.

As such, we currently do not have a lab space. Luckily, as a mobile makerspace this isn’t a big problem. We still have most of our equipment and so we are moving forward.

Starting March 14th we’ll be hosting monthly get togethers where makers and scientists alike can gather some place fun, have a drink, and chat about projects ideas and more. The first will take place at Intuition and start at 6:00pm. Come and hang out and let’s talk shop about the projects you want to make. You can also find us on Meetup here.

We’re also excited to announce that on April 17th we’ll be taking part in Mini Maker Faire, hosted by the MOSH. We’ll have lasers, glowing microbes, our gene gun, bioplastics, and more so be sure to stop by – we’re looking forward to seeing some of you there!

Finally, while we’re still committed to bringing you the tools and information you need to be a maker in Jacksonville, we also want to rebuild and open a new lab. With it we’ll be able to continue our research and share the methods and materials of biotechnology with all of you. We will be able to resume the biology classes and start new ones on other topics. Access to biology tools is normally restricted to high level university students and we want to make them available to all of you. If you’d like to help make that a reality, Donate Here.
As a 501c3 non profit, your donations are tax deductible.

That’s all for now, and thank you for your continued support!

-The Scihouse Team

Exciting News!

New 501c3 Status!

We recently submitted the paperwork to make Scihouse officially a 501c3 and we just received confirmation that our application has been approved!
So what does this mean for Scihouse? Well now donations made to Scihouse Inc, are tax deductable!

Hopefully this will help us grow and be a benifit to all of you as well.

What a great start to the new year!

Hands on Workshop With Hack@FSCJ

Are you interested in biohacking but don’t know where to start? Then this workshop is for you! One of the most important parts of “biohacking” is the biology aspect of it. So if you really want to get into it, biology is the first thing you need to learn. The workshop will cover the basics of biology, aseptic technique and microbial cell culture and you’ll get a chance to get hands on with all of it. The workshop is scheduled to take place on December 15th but the date is subject to change based on attendance, so if you’re interested be sure to RSVP at https://www.facebook.com/events/343348989454119/ so we know you’re coming! Hope to see you  all there!

How to Streak a Bacterial Plate

In microbiology, one of the first skills you learn is streaking. While the name sounds funny, it actually refers to a method of slowly diluting a bacterial culture until only single cells remain. To learn how to streak a plate, check out our new video!

Building a gene gun for less than $100

A gene gun is by far one of the most useful tools for getting DNA into an organism. But they are prohibitively expensive to buy ($35,000 new from biorad). Since we needed one for our projects we thought we’d try and build one! We managed to put ours together for less than $100 and it works great! Thanks so much to those who came to makercon this past weekend and saw us demonstrating it. To find out how to build your own gene gun, check out our new video!

DiyBio Care Package and a New Game Plan

We are happy to announce that our diyBio care package from The Odin has arrived! Exciting new toys for the biology lab are now here. Pictured below are the great materials that have been donated. You can see that we now have a PCR machine, gel box, new pipettes and tips to add to our collection, various reagents, and even a CRISPR kit! Not shown are the bacteria strains, dyes, and other materials for recombination.

If you are interested in learning how to get started as a biohacker, let us know. We’re currently testing the waters to see how many people are interested in a diy biology and biohacking class.

This brings us to the other announcement.

Due to a variety of environmental and infrastructural issues, we have chosen to move the makerspace out of the warehouse. But don’t worry! We are setting up to run classes at various locations around the city, including a drone factory and the Jax Library Makerspace. All the tools still exist and if you want to learn or do, we can pop up and make it happen. We’re still here, we’re just more mobile. Flexibility is good.

Thank you again to The Odin for their awesome donation of supplies, and let us know if you are ready to start biohacking.
